SAS Hexagonal Pavements: between history and innovation

When it comes to designing pavements that are aesthetically appealing and structurally robust, hexagonal geometry has naturally emerged as a popular choice among architects and urban planners. With their unique qualities of strength and flexibility, hexagonal pavements offer multiple advantages that make them invaluable in the construction industry.

Advantages of hexagonal pavements

Hexagonal pavements excel in their ability to withstand heavy loads and high traffic. The hexagonal slabs create a strong and stable surface that evenly distributes weight. This structural integrity not only ensures the longevity of the pavement, but also reduces the need for repairs or frequent replacements, making it a great option for outdoor spaces and high-traffic areas.

Furthermore, due to the modular nature of the hexagonal slabs, they can easily adapt to different terrains and irregular surfaces. This flexibility allows for the creation of intricate and curved designs, transforming basic streets into visually captivating landscapes.

Hexagonal Pavement in SAS

As we have already told you in the previous blog, one of the best sellers in our SAS catalogue is the Panot Gaudí. Designed in 1904 by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, the Panot Gaudí was initially conceived for Casa Batlló, on Passeig de Gràcia. Due to construction delays, the panot was finally used for Casa Milà, a few hundred meters further up the same avenue. In 1997, the Barcelona City Council decided to pave the entire Passeig de Gràcia with Gaudí’s panot as a tribute to the Barcelonian architect, transforming the avenue in one of the most photographed streets, and a symbol of the city.

A few years ago, at SAS, we launched a modern and minimalist reinterpretation of the Panot Gaudí, designing the Panot Hexagonal Bicolor. This product is manufactured with beveled edges to protect the corners of the slabs and reduce the chances of breakage during transportation and installation. Available in Bronze, Arena, and Anthracite, it allows you to create unique and original spaces.

The novelty of this 2023 is the Hexagonal Slab. It is a pavement manufactured with High Performance Concrete with a stone finish. This version of the hexagonal slab not only captures the format of the Panot Gaudí, but also its dimensions. It is available in three colors from the Bicolor range – Arena, Bronze, and Anthracite -, and with this piece you can create monochrome pavements or combine different colors to achieve unique blends.
